Aberdeen Parks and Recreation Areas. For every season there are activities in the City Parks. Indoor recreational activities are particularly popular in the fall and winter months. Hockey and recreational skating takes place at the Fairgrounds Odde Ice Arena. Swim indoors at the YMCA or Northern State University. Walk, bike, or jog down several newly-developed trails in and around the city. Roller blades and bike rentals can be had here too.

Sand Lake National Wildlife Refuge. A refuge and breeding grounds for migratory birds and other wildlife. 21,498 acres of prime wildlife habitat consisting of open lakes, wetlands, grasslands, woodlands and croplands. Home to more than 266 bird species, 40 mammal species, and a variety of fish, reptiles, and amphibians. Each spring and fall, millions of migratory birds rest and feed at Sand Lake NWR during their long migrations to and from breeding grounds. Wildlife observation, education, photography, hunting and fishing are all popular activities on this refuge.

Mina Lake Recreation Area. One of the first man-made lakes in northeast South Dakota. Its beginning dates back to the 1930s. Nestled along the wooded shores of Mina Lake, Mina Recreation Area is is a water-lover's haven with plenty of room for boating, fishing and swimming. Open year round. Camping. Cabins. Boating. Fishing. Accessible hiking trail.
