Russell, Kansas. A population of less than 5.000. This Kansas community is just north of Interstate 70, a east - west route as it intersects Highway 281 here. Thirty five miles north of Great Bend also on U.S. Highway 281. The county incorporated in 1872. The economy of Russell County is primarily agriculture.
The City of Russell has many beautiful tree lined parks throughout the town. The largest is Memorial Park Sports Complex with six lighted tennis courts, nine hole golf course, frisbee golf, playground, picnic areas, baseball diamonds, and a swimming pool. The other parks in town are Water Tower Park, Bronco Park, Fossil Creek Park, Aimes Park, Bickerdyke Park and Eagle Park. All of these parks are close to the highway of 281.
The Deines Cultural Center in Russell is a non-profit educational resource that enriches local cultural life by providing artistic exhibits, activities, musical events, concerts, educational and historical programs.
The permanent art collection of the Deines Cultural Center includes all of the wood engravings done by E. Hubert Deines (1894-1967) as well as various art works he collected during his lifetime. His own work is shown on a rotating basis at the Center.
In addition to the E. Hubert Deines display, the Center features regional artist’s work and traveling art exhibits on a regular basis. Other cultural activities such as recitals, readings and art classes are conducted here as well.

Lucas, Kansas an interesting community east off US Highway 281 Kansas, north of Russell. At the junction of K-18 and K-232. A farming community of about 500 people, known as the "Grassroots Art Capital of Kansas". Also home of the Grassroots Art Center, Miss Deeble's Rock Garden and tours of an operating post rock quarry. A lot of Art for a small town.
The world famous outsider work of art "Garden of Eden" has been an attraction since 1907, built by Civil War Veteran S.P. Dinsmoor. Over 150 three story concrete structures show the pioneering spirit of this town that embraces art by everyday people. The Garden of Eden is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Northeast of Russell from hwy 281 is Wilson Lake, know as the "Clearest Lake in Kansas". Wilson State Park is located on the south side of Wilson Reservoir. The park is divided into two areas, they are Hell Creek and Otoe.
