Can Do spirit on US Hwy 281 North Dakota

Cando, North Dakota. This town has around 1,000 hardy citizens. I say that because the City proclaims the founders had the "Can Do Spirit". "... and in virtue of our authority we select this location and name the town 'Cando' to show you that we can do it." ~ Captain Prosper Parker, February 14, 1884. I believe them. The weather up here on the Northern end of US Hwy 281 can get bone deep COLD. It reminds me of that old saying, "Can't do it, Can't stay."

Cando, on Highway 281 at the intersection of Hwy. 17, About 50 miles South of Canada and the International Peace Garden. The self proclaimed Duck Hunting Capital of ND. Lets have a look around Cando, this area on the Prairie has many opportunities for the outdoor enthusiast. There is hunting, fishing, birding, golf, local cultural events, and of course snow fun with skiing and snowmobiling. What about some Ice fishing? 

The City Cando has a State Certified Campground with reasonable rates and a bathhouse. Many Lakes in the region for camping, fishing and water fun. Bisbee and Armourdale reservoirs boast excellent summer and winter fishing. This town has a 9 hole golf course welcoming visitors. The record low in 1967 for Bismarck, ND was -47 F, but the average winter low temperatures are above that, around 0 are the norm. (grn). Summer highs of around 80 F are the norm. Your are a hardy breed when you can survive these Winters year after year. What North Dakotan wants to hear the Winter Texan whine when they say its COLD at 30 F. North Dakota in the Summer is the place to escape the scorching Summer temps of the Southern side of U.S. Highway 281.

If you are into Birding and/or the great outdoors, the Lake Alice Wildlife Refuge has 11,500-acres. Waterfowl to songbirds. Small mammals like red fox, coyotes, raccoons, muskrats and deer with an occasional moose. Big game, waterfowl, and upland game bird hunting are permitted on various portions of the Refuge.
