As the story goes, a local fellow by the name of Jibo Hewitt, a local historian, had some hand in getting US Hwy 281 to come through Medicine Lodge and getting it paved, to junction with Hwy 160; From Canada to Mexico....Jibo named it "Crossroads of the Nation - A Transcontinental Highway!"
And he built the first motel and cafe unit in 1945, along Hwy 160 to be able to handle all the people passing through town! Jibo was elected National President of the Highway 160 Association in 1951, by 1954 he headed up the Kansas Highway 281 Association and was vice president for the same road. Kansas was the first of the six states to pave every one of its own 259 miles." " By the time of Jibo's fifth year as President, he had driven from Canada to Mexico, on the great "palms to pines" all-paved highway, and Jibo was really proud of the 'handsome signs' that proclaimed it the "American Legion Memorial Highway." - "Medicine Lodge, Kansas - Crossroads of America," home of the famed Peace Treaty Pageant. Jibo made a name for himself, and Medicine Lodge, and never stopped promoting!!
Historically, he enjoyed playing the part of Kit Carson, in the Medicine Lodge Peace Treaty, and other times too! Jibo, with shoulder-length grey locks, neatly trimmed mustache, full grown, and his trusty long gun cleaned and oiled, all in readiness for his role as Kit Carson in the great Peace Treaty Pageant! He researched Mr Carson to follow his ways.... Jibo's stories (above) are written in the book, "Medicine Lodge" by Nellie Snyder Yost, north Platte, Nebraska...
